Velo vs MarkUp.io

MarkUp.io is a review tool for teams that comment on live sites, images, PDFs and video with unlimited users, priced by the number of new MarkUps created each month. Velo turns a website capture into a reviewable release, anchors each thread to a target with a source checksum, and shows how each open pin fares when a new version arrives.

Four steps. An address is pasted into the capture bar. The release is prepared inside its frame. The first pin lands on the heading. Its thread is posted beside the page.

What the client does to comment

Opens the link. Reviewers need verified access before they can post; commenting can be allowed or closed per link.

Tested19

Opens the link, enters a name and email, drops a pin. No account is created.

Whether the link works on a phone

Not stated yet.

Unverified

Not stated on MarkUp.io’s site. A creator can preview the site at desktop, tablet and mobile widths.

Unverified115

Whether approval is explicit

Threads can be resolved, reopened, or closed, with an expected revision so an older view cannot overwrite a newer one. No release-level approval is claimed.

Tested19

Partly. Admins and owners set a status such as “Open for review” or “Completed”; reviewers submit a sign-off and the count is shown. There is no approve or request-changes decision.

Documented9

What happens when the site redeploys

The shared release is a snapshot; later source changes do not silently replace it. Velo recaptures on request or from a deploy hook, keeps the draft, and shows how each open pin fares.

Tested19

The pin is keyed to the page URL and a web element. When the element is gone the comment reads “pinned to a missing element” and keeps its pin-time screenshot. Websites do not get versions; images and PDFs do.

Documented678

What feedback is anchored to

An element, text run, region, or page target with a source checksum, plus viewport and route.

Tested19

A page URL plus a web element, with a screenshot from the moment the pin was placed.

Version drift

Velo shows how each open pin fares on the new version and keeps the original evidence. A pin that lost its spot stays visible and asks a person to place it again. Nothing resolves a thread automatically.

Deploy hooks

Velo can capture a new version of a website you already review, on request or after a deploy. A new capture is a draft. The version you shared stays current until you publish. Deploy hooks are per document, shown once, stored hashed, and revocable.

Checksummed targets

A thread can point to an element, text, region, or page target with a source checksum. The release, target, conversation, and decision stay legible as a single working record.

Images and PDFs

Images and PDFs version too: upload a new file, see which pins moved, changed, or vanished, then publish.

Which one

Choose Velo if

  • The review has to survive a redeploy: a captured release that later changes do not replace, threads anchored with a source checksum, and a drift summary for every open pin when a new version arrives.

Choose MarkUp.io if

  • The team needs unlimited users, Slack or Teams notifications and an API, and creates a predictable number of new reviews each month.

MarkUp.io retired its free plan and moved Pro from $29 to $79 a month in early 2025, according to reviews on Trustpilot dated 2025-05-02 and a designer’s post dated 2025-02-11.
